“Stay Safe This Halloween: Rain and Wind Forecast Calls for Extra Caution”

As Halloween approaches, the Nova Scotia government is urging families and trick‑or‑treaters to take extra precautions amid a forecast of heavy rain and strong winds on Friday, October 31.

According to meteorologists, rainfall of 30 to 50 mm is expected across the province, alongside wind gusts potentially reaching 75 km/h, as the remnants of Hurricane Melissa pass south of the region.

Minister for Emergency Management Kim Masland emphasised the importance of safety:

“We know how much kids look forward to dressing up and collecting treats. With heavy rain and wind, we want to make sure that kids stay safe on this exciting day. So hold onto your hats and walk carefully with an adult.”

✅ Safety Tips to Remember

  • Ensure children are visible in the dark by using flashlights, glow sticks or wearing costumes with reflectors.

  • Parents should carry a cell phone to receive any weather alerts or emergency messages.

  • Check for fallen branches, debris, or puddles when walking — and be extra careful when crossing streets.

  • Drive slowly and stay alert for pedestrians in the dark and slippery conditions.

  • Always trick‑or‑treat in a group or with a trusted adult, and never go into a stranger’s house or car.

  • Have an adult inspect any candy before it is eaten.
